There are currently two methods for merging (inserting) the contents from an Image Upload Field, namely with Bookmarks and Picture Content Controls. The methods are conceptually similar but leverage different features of MS Word to achieve the same outcome.
Picture Content Controls
We suggest that this is the default method for inserting images as content controls are more robust, flexible and searchable than bookmarks. You can also repeat the same control throughout a document whereas this is not the case for bookmarks.
To add a Picture Content Control, switch to the Developer tab and find the picture icon within the 'Controls' section as per the screenshot below.
Once inserted, the control appears as below, with a 'blank' picture inside. The title of the control dictates which image field is merged into the control. Please note that unlike other content controls, the title of the Content Control must match the Label of the relevant Image Upload Field and not a Named Range.
If the Image Upload Field is not answered (either because it was hidden due to logic or unanswered because it was optional) and therefore does not contain any image files, the Content Control and its contents will be removed from the generated document.
The size and placement of the image in the Picture Content Control will dictate the size and position of the output image with the largest dimension shrunk to fit the placeholder image and the aspect ratio held constant. For further details on how to place an image in a document, please read here.
Bookmarks on Pictures
Should you prefer not to use the Picture Content Control for whatever reason, there is an alternative method to merge image files from the form. This involves inserting a 'placeholder' image into the Word document using the method highlighted in the screenshot below.
Note that the contents of the placeholder is not important as it will either be replaced or deleted in the output document.
Once the placeholder image has been inserted into the document, you can add a bookmark to it by selecting the 'Insert' tab and choosing the 'Bookmark' icon as per the image below. As with Picture Content Controls, the name of the Bookmark must match the Label of the Image Upload Field from which the image file will be merged.
It's important to note that Bookmarks can only contain alphanumeric characters and the underscore (_) character. Bookmarks must also be unique although any underscore appended to (i.e. at the end of) the bookmark will be ignored. This allows the same image to be used in multiple places across the document.
The size and placement of the inserted placeholder image will dictate the size and position of the merged image with the largest dimension shrunk to fit the placeholder image and the aspect ratio held constant. For further details on how to place an image in a document, please read here.
